ABOUT

THE MALTING PROCESS

We modify locally sourced New York State grains in our single vessel malt system.  A deliberate no hurry approach enables us to adapt our malting process to the character of the raw material encouraging the grains’ finest modification. Intimate knowledge gleaned from handling the grain throughout the process allows for an exceptional end product.  We pride ourselves in our ability to create high quality artisanal New York State malts satisfying our customers’ varying requests.

THE PEOPLE

EMILY HILL & JUDD HALLETT

Murmuration Malts is an artisanal malthouse owned and operated by Judd Hallett and Emily Hill. The Finger Lakes Region of New York State is our home where we raise our children and is the backdrop to a thriving craft beverage community. We love craft beverages and malting is our way of complementing this handcrafted community.

Judd’s introduction to craft malting began with the friendly folks at Farmhouse Malts & Brewery.  The, “if we can do it, you can do it!” spirit propelled us forward.  Judd has completed the Advanced Craft Malting Course at Hartwick College and we are members of the Craft Maltsters Guild.  We continue to educate ourselves and work towards implementing all we can to create the best malts available.

The restoration of a dilapidated service station, destined for ruin in Bloomfield, NY became our labor of love.  It is our production facility, on-site grain storeroom, and office.   We are devoted to our region’s past and present. Malting is a process with great history and an exciting future. We are looking forward to expanding the availability of New York State artisanal malts.
